History of Handball
This game combines elements of Basketball, water polo and indoor soccer and was invented by a school Teacher in Denmark about 125 year ago. First time Handball was included in Berlin Olympic Games 1936. German won the gold, Austria got silver whereas Switzerland got bronze medal. After the laps of many years this game was included in the regular charter of the Olympic Games since 1972 for men and 1976 for women. The World Championships are being organized since 1938 for men and 1957 for women, has been dominated by Europeans with teams from the former Yugoslavia and Soviet Union winning the most medals. In 1946 at Copenhagen, Denmark and Sweden with the help of other six countries i.e. France, Norway, Poland, Holland, Finland and Switzerland formed International Handball Federation(IHF) Now 209 countries are members of IHF. The Handball was declared ranked 2nd during Rio de Junairo, Olympic Games, 2016 after Football in team sports.
History of Pakistan Handball
After completing his study in Specialization Sports (special trainer Athletics) from Germany, Mr. Muhammad Shafiq introduced the game of Handball in Pakistan in 1984 at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, which is the hub of Handball in Pakistan. During 20th National Games, Faisalabad, 1984 an exhibition match between National Athletics & Fitness Club and University of Agriculture, Faisalabad was played at Iqbal Stadium ,Faisalabad. Since then, the game of Handball has been gradually developing and gaining popularity.
The Pakistan Handball Federation was formed in April,1985. Mr. Ahsan Alam and Mr. Muhammad Shafiq were elected as President and Secretary General of the Federation respectively. Prof. Anwar Ch, Syed Shahid Ali, Sardar Khair Muhammad, Prof Abdul Sattar Khan were elected Vice President, Ch. Jamil Akhtar, Mr .Muhammad Fahim, Associate Secretary and Riaz Ahmad Bajwa as Treasure. At present Mr. Muhammad Shafiq is President, Saqlain Kousar is Secretary General .First National Handball Championship was held at University of Agriculture, Faisalabad in 1985.Eight teams participated in this Championship which won by Railway. At present Wapda is National Games Women and Army is National Games Men Champion whereas Wapda is National Men and Army is Women Champion.
